ETO offers a culturally sensitive pre-employment training
program specifically designed to meet the needs of special
needs Job Network or CDEP job seekers. Many jobseekers are
hesitant to attend mainstream pre-employment programs as
there may be few or no other participants with their issues
or from their culture. Also the course may not address the specific cultural barriers and challenges
these
job seekers face on entering employment. ETO research
indicates that new employees leave their jobs for a
range of reasons that fall under two general categories:
- How
they perceive their treatment within the workplace, and
- Issues with balancing family/cultural and work
responsibilities/obligations.
For example the ETO Indigenous pre-employment course is conducted
initially in a culturally appropriate format ensuring that
Indigenous jobseekers are prepared to recognise the specific
barriers to employment that they must overcome. Strategies
are then developed with each individual to build their
levels of self esteem and confidence to succeed.
Participants are exposed to the requirements of mainstream
workplace cultures and what they need to do to meet the
challenges of adapting and coping in such environments. The
course is intensive, it is delivered by an ETO senior
employment consultant and a trainer. The trainer
concentrates on delivering the course content, conducting
assessments and building competence. The employment
consultant builds a personal relationship with each
participant to provide a platform for building self-esteem,
and if necessary, challenging behaviours. Over the term of
the course the employment consultant builds a skills,
knowledge and attitude profile on each participant. Along
with some career guidance input and personal employment
preferences this is then used to help individual
participants determine an appropriate job choice in the
prevailing local job market. ETO have successfully
delivered this course in Darwin, Melbourne, NSW and ACT with
a diverse range of mostly Indigenous participants.
ETO pre-employment training is specifically designed to
ensure that special needs Job Network clients are job ready
and competitive at job placement in percentages equal to
other Job Network jobseekers. The course costs are cost
neutral to Job Networks as it is paid for from the JobSeeker
account. Back
