Employers across Australia are making a business decision
to commence recruitment of, or to increase the number of
Indigenous Australian staff they employ and/or broaden
their company's interaction with Indigenous Australian
clients. Employment and Training Outcomes (ETO)
consultants, specialise in assisting these companies to
employ Indigenous Australians. They see cross-cultural
communication skills and Indigenous cultural awareness as a
major component of and critical to having a successful
indigenous employment strategy and to ensuring positive
Indigenous employment outcomes.
ETO deliver a workshop titled 'Indigenous Australians
in the workplace. Making it a positive experience for all.'
This session ensures that we all Remember Diversity and
Culture when communicating.' The purpose of this workshop is to provide
business with the
necessary understanding and awareness to develop effective
communication skills for engagement with Indigenous
Australian staff and clients. Also to provide Indigenous
Jobseekers with the necessary understanding and awareness to
develop effective communication skills for job placement and
retention.
This workshop has been
delivered to over 4000 participants with very positive
feedback. This workshop highlights the cross cultural
communication issues that arise in working with Indigenous
Australians and helps build an understanding of the range of
cultural perspectives displayed in multicultural Australia
and the key issues impacting on cross-cultural
communication both at a personal and corporate level. It
will also assist you to improve your cross cultural
communication skills. Participants in this workshop will:
- Learn that it is not
necessary to understand everything about a different
culture, in order to communicate effectively with a person
from that culture.
- Learn that what is important to understand is that culture influences people’s
perceptions, behaviour, value systems and ways of
communicating. As a result you will gain the ability to determine which
characteristics of a particular culture are the critical
ones, and learn how to overcome cultural barriers to
communication.
- Participate in a role-play and gain insight into Indigenous Australian
culture. Over a period of 2 hours Australian history
will be seen from an alternate viewpoint, that is, from
an Indigenous Australian viewpoint. This experience of
walking a short time "in some one else's shoes" provides insight into Indigenous Australian
culture and helps identify some of the causes of
disadvantage for Indigenous Australians in employment,
education and training. It also helps in the identification
of potential
problems and issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people, in order to help in the development of effective
communication strategies for use in communicating with
Indigenous Australians. - Gain an insight into
and an understanding of cross-cultural relations with
Indigenous people and the impact that history has had on
these relations. Together we'll look at Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander culture, the inter-relationship of
history, policy and Aboriginal responses, discrimination,
racism, stereotypes and attitudes as they relate to the
workplace and work relationships.
Back to Top The workshop will also cover:
- Definitions and issues of identity
- A model of “what shapes belief” and its impact on
behaviour
- The context of the contemporary situation and its
relevance to employers
- Cross cultural communication challenges and skills
- An awareness of protocols in formal and informal
situations
- Putting this knowledge into practice
How will the workshop be presented?
By ensuring participants have the opportunity to:
- Share the experience of a trainer experienced in
communicating with Indigenous clients
- See the big picture through visual presentation
- Hear stories about the individuals on the ground
- Listen and question
- Interact with the group
- Raise and discuss issues
- Jot down notes/key points
- Know where to access more information
- Discuss your issues and needs in the workplace
and explore ways to improve your cross cultural
communication (negotiation) with your Indigenous
clients
This workshop is designed specifically to help
Indigenous and non Indigenous Australians work
together. However, please note that the principles covered at this
workshop, and the learnings from the workshop are
applicable to all cross cultural communication
situations. The role play is designed to demonstrate
how easy it is to gain the level of cultural
understanding necessary to have an effective cross
cultural business communication process. While the course
will greatly increase one's understanding of
Indigenous Australian cross-cultural issues, it
will also improve one's cross cultural communication
skills.
